What the industry people have to say:

Dicapo Opera Theater has the unique combination of intimacy in size and clarity in acoustic. I would recommend this space to any discerning listener.
– Katherine M. Olsen, Artistic Administrator Baz Lurhmann’s La Boheme on Broadway

I prefer to hear voices I am not familiar with at Dicapo Opera Theater as it is a real theater ambiance and the sound gives me an accurate idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the individual singer’s capacities.
– Robert Lombardo, Opera manager and Arts Consultant

The acoustics for auditioning at Dicapo are the truest in town. What you hear in back of this space is a great indicator of what will happen in your theater...moreover, big voices are not cheated but sufficiently rewarded.
– Brian Jauhiainen, Artistic Advisor/Macau Int’l Festival of Music & Opera Hong Kong

Dicapo Opera has provided an excellent space for Opera Carolina auditions. The intimate theater has good acoustics, which are not overly live, giving a true impression of the vocal capabilities of the artists. It is clearly one of the best sites in Manhattan for auditioning opera artists.
– James Meena, Opera Carolina

Having experienced the majority of audition spaces in the City of New York, I can state without hesitation that Dicapo far surpasses any and all of its competitors. A charming theatre in its own right, the acoustics are quite admirable and very accurate. Its ambience provides a pleasant atmosphere to endure what often can become a tedious experience. Dicapo is easily accessible from the New York area and ranks number one on my list.
– Mark D. Flint, Conductor

Over the past 20 years of semiannual auditions in New York City, (trying all manner of audition spaces from small to large, seedy to svelte), I have come to prefer the Dicapo Opera theatre because it is a proper theatrical space, which tends to draw a more balanced audition/performance from the singing-actor. It also has the perfect acoustic for vocal auditions of any sort (just dry enough for me to be able to gauge the size and warmth of a voice without it being overly “helped” by reverberation). The design of the space also allows me to have a friendlier access to the auditionee, which I find to be invaluable in sizing up the “whole package.” The theatre has an excellent piano and a friendly and accessible staff.
– Robert Swedberg, General Director, Orlando Opera

Of the spaces I have found in New york City to hold auditions for opera houses in Europe, Dicapo ranks among the top two. The acoustic is clear and crisp enough that you can tell from the first tones if a singer has a solid technique and whether that voice will carry in halls many times the size of Dicapo. For the NYIOP Auditions we have very specific needs regarding audition space and entry space for the singers. The entry foyer there provides us a perfect place for singers to be met and greeted and for them to have a few moments of silence before singing. The hall itself is large enough for the directors to get a clear feeling of a singer yet small enough to provide an intimate atmosphere for colleagues to compare thoughts and speak freely. I think that it is as ideal as one could want to hear singers in New York.
